Toronto’s 6 Fest — An Ode To The Future of OVO

Ryerson University’s two-day music festival brought home some Toronto talent, but not without a lil’ controversy.

Although the RSU had been hyping the festival for months, the entire show had been somewhat of a mystery. And a week before the festival there were no announcements of a location, or who would be performing.

The mystery surrounding the festival carried into the actual event — when set lists had failed to have been listed, and day-two headliner Big Sean was suddenly no longer performing. Word has it he bailed on the Ryerson University event last minute.

Day one saw Pusha T and Diplo hit the stage, despite the night featuring no special guests as advertised on the posters. However, the 6fest host hinted to there being a “surprise guest” at day 2 — the city crossed its fingers.

Day-two again had a pretty strange feel two it, it was basically an OVO festival show with BakaNotNice, Roy Woods and DVSN performing before French Montana. And with every act any song that had an affiliation to Drake, the crowd was on its toes once again hoping to be graced by the 6 god himself.

Ultimately, there was no special guest. And once French Montana left the stage for the final time, the crowd stayed put, in anticipation.

Then began minutes of chanting, as cries of “we want drake” sporadically buzzed from the puzzled audience. The crowd still held out hope that the hometown boy would jump from side-stage and give the people what they’d been waiting for.

Before realizing he wasn't, and eventually leaving — en masse.

Fans may not have gotten Drake, but those in attendance can’t deny that Toronto’s yonge hip hop scene was given the spotlight it so desperatly deserves. The Yonge guns like Roy Woods, DVSN and Smoke dawg filled in for drake, and truly carried the wave.
